YOUR RESPONSIBILTIES AS A HEALTHCARE PROVIDER

If you are a hospital, medical centre, doctor’s surgery, dentist’s surgery or other medical facility you must appoint a responsible person to manage fire safety.

Please Remember, You could be fined or go to prison if you do not follow fire safety regulations.

For healthcare premises good housekeeping, such as storing waste in the appropriate storage areas and not letting it build up, will lower the chances of fire starting. In addition, the amount of electrical medical equipment used means that healthcare facilities are at greater risk of fire through overloaded sockets and overworked cables, so it is vital that Portable Equipment Testing (PAT) is carried out on a regular basis.

 

Extreme care must be taken where medical gas cylinders, including oxygen, are used and stored. The local Fire Service must be informed if gas, including oxygen, cylinders are used or stored at a premises, in addition cylinders must be:

  • Kept away from extremes of heat, fires and naked flame

  • Be secured to prevent them falling over

  • Stored so that full and empty containers are in separate locations

Your Responsibilities

As the “Registered Person” you must:

  • Have an up to date fire risk assessment which has been reviewed and updated as required during the previous 12 months and pays attention to those at special risk such the elderly, people with disabilities, people with special needs and  children

  • Have an up to date evacuation plan that pays attention to those at special risk such as the elderly, people with             disabilities, people with special needs and children

  • Have fully operational fire doors which are checked at least quarterly

  • Ensure there is access to escape routes at all times and that the escape routes are free from hazards

  • Have the right firefighting equipment and extinguishers in the right places and make sure they are serviced on a        regular basis

  • Carry out PAT testing on a regular basis

  • Make sure all staff have basic fire training and where appropriate evacuation training for vulnerable people
